Why It Matters

Endometriosis isn’t just a health issue—it’s a workplace, economic, and equity issue.

  • 1 in 7 Australians live with endometriosis or chronic pelvic pain.

  • It takes on average 6 - 8 years to be diagnosed.

  • Over 50% of people living with endo say it negatively affects their work, career trajectory, or ability to remain in the workforce.

  • The condition costs the Australian economy over $9.7 billion each year more than 2/3 of that due to lost productivity.

In 2023, the World Health Organisation listed endometriosis among the top 9 diseases globally that threaten women’s economic stability. The impacts are most profound for people already facing inequities young people, women in casual work, people in regional and remote areas, and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

🚫 What this looks like at work:

  • Missed opportunities for promotion or leadership

  • Undisclosed pain and fatigue leading to performance concerns

  • Increased absenteeism or presenteeism

  • Employees exiting the workforce altogether

✅ What change looks like:

When workplaces are proactive—not reactive—about endometriosis, outcomes shift:

  • Staff feel safe, seen, and supported

  • Leaders know how to have informed, compassionate conversations

  • Reasonable adjustments are implemented, not avoided

  • Workplace culture reflects real inclusion

Supporting people with endo is not just the right thing to do; it’s smart policy.
Let’s build workplaces that don’t just talk about wellbeing. Let’s act on it.
